Mainly at the time, the ghostpe.exe executable shipping with the Personal Editions of ghost didn't seem to want to save to network drives (a requirement for me at the time, even in home edition) so I ponied up. since the personal edition of Ghost (unless you bought Norton Systemworks, which also came with Ghost Personal Edition) was about $70, The corp edition cost me roughly two copies of the regular edition. ![]() ![]() Set in 2087, Technobabylon tells the tale of two detectives, Charlie Regis and Max Lao, who are hot on the trail of a "Mindjacker" who hacks into others' brains, steals their knowledge, then leaves them for dead. Would it be too much to get a Trance-proper section of the game - ie more content is always good :p.Wadjet Eye Games' sci-fi point-and-click adventure Technobabylon has just launched on iOS. Our view of the Trance is restricted to mind-machine interfaces, and to the Den's disco - so "lame" in comparison that even Latha remarks. For all of Letha's talk about the Trance and its endless possibilited, and her role as a creator, we never catch as much of a glimpse of that. Still, the section at the restaurant is one of my favourites, but still.įinally the Trance. Seems like all WadjetEye games have to include one, and I'd really like to know why jahiliyya's hacker collective wasn't badass enough for Nina, so she had to bring in the world's elite - in person, for that matter. And Lao can then decide if she wants to respond sympathetically or pissed.Īnother thing that got an eyeroll was the conspiracy. Instead the game gets it out of the way as soon as it brings it in, makes Regis disappear, and only mentions it in passing just before the end. It could have been much more - it could have severe reprecussions for Regis' relationship to his partner, and maybe form the basis for the story branching out mid-game (with Regis working for or against the blackmailer). I thought the blackmail element was resolved way too quickly and was completely wasted. ![]() That being said, I have certain objections with the game's nadling of certain plot angles. ![]() Disturbing thought: Maybe I've grown used to 10-hour length adventure games. More importantly from a player perspective, the game didn't feel too short, though it could have easily included more content. I took 20 hours to finish Erica Reed, but Technobabylon was easier - I never really got stuck in a place. The game is short, my first playthrough lasted about 12 hours, and I was going at a very leisurly pace, making sure I look at everything, interact with everything, and load to a save to try allavailable outcomes. No way Regis would've done it, but he was left at the hub' ground floor, waiting off the influence of the anesthetics :) I had Lao in the turbine room, and I think she would have been intrigued by the possibilities offered by Nina's plan. In my own playthough, I tried to role-play. But since the shackling and unshackling of AI's has been a standard feature of sci-fi literature ever since the Neuromance, I felt prepared for the game's final section. Yes, I wish the philosophical questions involved were discussed in the game itself, and yes, I hope at some point game developers go back to the Tex Murphy way of doing multiple endings (instead of having the player stand before a console and press a} or b}). Latha was my favourite, both her style and her voice acting. Regis I found a bit bland, but he had some nice moments, and the constant tension with Lao kept him interesting. I also greatly enjoyed the references to Beneath a Steel Sky (and made up a few of myself - I spent most of the game thinking Newton was built in Australia :) ). Future technology was implemented well in the game aspect of Technobabylon and lent some fresh air in the "use everything on everything" aspect of the game - although I am still uncertain why you can use the wetware on certain systems and not others. Right from the start, I felt I could relate to the characters and appreciate their inside jokes (cops with PhDs ftw). I found the way the plot introduced me to the world around and behind the game itself superb. The game presented me with a plausible and consistent background, certainly bleak but not overtly so. I specifically liked Technobabylon's futuristic setting. And yet Technobabylon felt better than the company's other releases (and I am loking at you too, Resonance). WadjetEye's making of new game sin that format makes me very happy. To be honest, I've always had a soft spot for the classic point and clicks and their 640x480 resolution. So you get a very long wall of text, more like review. I binge-played, finished it yesterday, and now I am scouring the forums for scraps of content like a thrall in need of their fix. I really liked Technobabylon, much more than other of similar genre and setting (I am looking at you, Gemni Rue). ![]() ![]() ![]() To get a feel for the lens through which Dramatica sees stories, check out how it breaks down the indie film classic Donnie Darko. I assumed the two pieces were to be overlaid, or read separately as approximations of English letters, and came up with NULUD and NOCUO as magic words, neither of which did anything. I found both of these notes during my travels, but managed to completely misread this composite clue initially: The game does do a creditable job of anticipating sensible but useless actions and responding appropriately in context - Your knife is not big enough to kill this snake is a lot more meaningful than I can't do that yet! and the like. And why the King is so generous to us after we have killed dozens of his subjects remains a mystery. Also, most of the desert landscapes are similar, and we can examine the rock even in rooms where there does not appear to be one. We can LOOK ROCK to discover the scorpion, but it's not until we look at a rock and discover nothing special that we can actually take it. But no citizens are about and the buildings can't be entered, so there's not much to do there - we have to wander into the desert in search of something more interesting.
